Roaches Hike

The Hike Details
- The Roaches & Lud’s Church is a challenging but iconic 9-mile route in the Peak District.
- $40pp | Ages 16+
- Exertion Level: Hard (3/4)
- Start Time: Trip departs RAFM promptly at 0600.
- Travel Time: Expect a three-hour drive to our destination with a rest break where you’ll be able to purchase breakfast if needed.
Itinerary
- We begin with a steep ascent up The Roaches, a rocky ridge rising to 1,657 feet over Tittesworth Reservoir. The name comes from the Old French word roches (rocks). These distinctive crags, sculpted by the elements, are tied to many ancient legends.
- Then pause at the top of Hen Cloud to catch our breath and enjoy the views. . Legend says the hill resembles a roosting hen, though its name may also come from the Anglo-Saxon for “steep cliff.”
- We continue on to Doxley Pool, where local myth says the evil mermaid Jenny Greenteeth lies in wait to trap hikers in the mist.
- After we will pass the iconic trig point at 505 meters (1,657 ft) above sea level before the path changes to woodland.
- Next, we enter Lud’s Church, an 18-meter-deep chasm covered in vibrant moss. We know this fissure was a secret 15th-Century worship site for the Lollards, and legend holds that Robin Hood and Friar Tuck also hid here.
- Once we finish exploring Lud’s Church, we will complete the loop, retrace our steps over The Roaches, and descend to the minibus for the return trip.
Essential Gear Checklist
- Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in waterproof hiking boots or shoes. Waterproof socks are highly recommended.
- Outerwear: Rain/windproof jacket and waterproof pants.
- Layers: Lightweight, breathable hiking pants or shorts, and a sweater or fleece.
- Accessories: Hat, gloves, scarf.
- Supplies: Water bottle, snacks, small day pack (for gear, water, and food), insect repellent, and first aid kit.
